Workshops’ description

Devising Kathak Choreography with Misty Wensel

Rooted in Kathak repertoire we will unearth contemporary approaches to dance making. New trajectories will be explored through guided improvisation and choreographic studies. Choreography will be prompted through the use of text and images. Collectively and individually dancers will create short studies with the intention that these studies will be utilized for collective experimentation through our weekend sessions.

Please bring to class:
– A scrap of text that you feel has movement potential
– An image that stirs something in you

Chasing the Theme with Movements with Maulik Shah

This is to try and understand how a dancer, in a role of a choreographer can build upon a theme with various dance components at his/her disposal.

As a choreographer you chase a theme, you explore various possibilities to enhance the theme and as a dancer you decorate the theme, a story or even the abstractness lying within, with various instruments; instruments that you have inherited, honed and created: like movements, taal, rhythm, costumes, lighting, stagecraft etc.

We will work upon our take, our understanding of choreographing a piece in Kathak dance style, with emphasis on movements, creation of movements and rhythms, without disconnecting with the tradition and classicism of Kathak as a dance style.
